Adidas Teams Up With Angel Chen
top article For SS20, Adidas teams up for the first time with one of the hottest rising stars in the global fashion scene, China’s very own Angel Chen. Comprised of eight new women’s footwear models, the new capsule collection channels a sophisticated yet eye-catching aesthetic capturing Chen’s unmistakable way through bold and colorful graphics.
Angel Chen is quickly becoming one of the brightest creative talents to emerge from China’s nascent fashion scene. The name behind the brand, Angel Chen, moved to London at the age of 17 to study at prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design.
This is the first collaboration for Angel Chen as she teams up with Adidas, which takes the form of four new footwear styles. There are two colorways displayed in a brightly playful execution that channel the mood and look of the 80s, 90s fashion, and creative scenes from around the world.
Available in a black and in a white version, the Sleek Super, as its name suggests, features a minimalist leather upper that has been fused to an oversized sole. Angel Chen renders the outsole semi-translucent, through which great splashes of color, inspired by Chinese calligraphy, can be seen on the midsole.
Chinese calligraphy also provides the inspiration for two new takes on the rugged all-weather Kiellor shoe. Here, that inspiration manifests itself on the tongue and the vamp, appearing across a bright blue iteration and a youthful, multicolored iteration– each one as eye-catching as the other.
Bold color-blocking characterizes Angel’s new Ozweegos, perfect echo to the brand’s iconic and vivid approach as well as a reference to traditional Chinese Martial Arts, one of the most influential sports in China.
Ozweegos offer the perfect platform for both the bright yellow graphic effects that Angel Chen applies. Flashes of primary colors punctuate the other across an otherwise blacked-out version. The final style of the capsule collection is another explicit reference to the most significant sports in China. The Magmur Runner, in fact, features an exaggerated, chunky silhouette that proudly wears its retro heart on its sleeve and brilliantly recalls the rubber layer of a Ping Pong racket. As per the bright blue Kiellor and the bright yellow Ozweego, Angel Chen has conceived an entirely monochromatic Magmur, this time in scarlet red. It is accompanied by a grey adaptation that nevertheless finds room for vibrant flashes of color. The rich and vibrant chromaticism perfectly encapsulates the flashes of joyous tints that characterize the brand’s bright ethos. adidas Originals by Angel Chen will be available for purchase on May 30th. –
